Sleep Genius Infographic Equates Diet Success with Adequate SleepThere are, to be sure, many habits that will help you to be successful when you’re on a diet. Most people however wouldn’t consider sleep, or the lack of sleep, to be one of them.

A new infographic from Sleep Genius — a groundbreaking mobile app helping exhausted brains and bodies get quality rest through the power of cutting edge sleep science — begs to differ.

The visual in question, shared below, reveals that people who don’t get enough sleep will find it harder to lose weight because of a number of problems a lack of sleep causes, including one that’s pretty important; they’ll be hungrier.

For example, if a person sleeps less than 5 ½ hours a night, it will be 55% more difficult for them to lose weight due to the fact that their metabolic rate will be lower, meaning that their bodies won’t digest food as quickly. For those who sleep less than six hours every night, it equates to feeling 25% hungrier during the day.

For women seeking to slim down, the bad news is that sleeping less than five hours every night equates to almost 5 more pounds of extra weight. The good news however is that, if they sleep more, the average woman will lose between 3 and 15 pounds in just two months (Take that, diet pill manufacturers!).

Interestingly enough, the obesity problem in America might just be linked to a lack of sufficient rest,  and the fact that one in four people is suffering from some type of sleep disorder (and using sleeping pills to deal with it).

The infographic also points to two different hormones that are negatively affected when a person sleeps too little, and the relationship between sleep, the human brain and appetite.

It’s interesting stuff, to say the least, and seems to show that, if you’re keen on losing weight for the upcoming Holiday season (or any time, for that matter), getting enough sleep is one of the ways to do it.
