With SMS and other mobile communication technologies gaining momentum within healthcare, Whaley believes QR Codes represent a unique opportunity for mobile engagement and could become the “next big thing” in hospital marketing.  Though still in its infancy, several hospitals across the country are already using QR codes in interesting ways, such as prompting women to get mammograms, providing instant online hospital tours, and linking patients to their Facebook pages.

The University carried out a one-year clinical trial of BP monitors for patients with diabetic hypertension to see how reminder systems can truly impact compliance.  A total of 110 patients were used in the study with each receiving a home BP monitor and a Blackberry smartphone to transmit data back to researchers.  However, only 55 in the experimental group received a special app that provided reminder calls when they didn’t measure their BP at least three times per week.  Those in the control group had a monitor, but were simply asked to take readings, with no automatic follow-up.

In addition, members are finding that new “personalized health action plans” — an added function of the platform — can become a gateway to better overall health.  For example, based on a recent internal survey, members who use the new PHRs are following up on recommended care, such as getting needed blood tests or starting finess programs, 68 percent more often than members who aren’t using PHRs.

One of the primary reasons this is taking place is because of the alert/reminder system Aetna has built into the platform.  PHR users can take advantage of a variety of “care alerts,” that remind users of things like needed tests or even notices of possible harmful drug interactions.  Alerts and reminders are also built into additional “health action plans” such as ones designed to control diabetes, lose weight, lower cholesterol, quit smoking or reach a number of other health goals.
