This week, the American Telemedicine Association (ATA) announced that Ann Mond Johnson will assume leadership as CEO beginning March 5, 2018.

ATA Supports Expanded Telemedicine Use for Opioid Crisis


The American Telemedicine Association (ATA) announced recently that it supports givernment plans to expand the reach of telemedicine to treat the nation’s opioid epidemic.

“President Trump’s action effectively directs Health and Human Services (HHS) Acting Secretary Eric Hargan, to remove the prohibition on prescribing controlled substances – including anti-addiction medicines like naloxone – currently restricted by the 2008 Ryan Haight Act,” a provided statement reads. “President Trump, by today’s action, is using a narrow provision of the law to set aside major restrictions for a declared ‘public health emergency.'”

“Allowing physicians to prescribe controlled substances by telemedicine to treat patients with addictions, using medication assisted treatments, is a very positive move and one that will certainly help more patients to access high quality treatment.” said Dr. Peter Yellowlees, ATA’s President.

ClearHealth Quality Institute to Roll Out new Telemedicine Accreditation Program at ATA’s Fall Forum


ClearHealth Quality InstituteTM (CHQI), an independent health care accrediting body that incorporates the next generation of quality and outcomes measures, will host a pre-conference workshop and serve as a featured exhibitor at the American Telemedicine Association (ATA) Fall Forum – Edge 2017.

According to a statement issued to the media, the conference will be held October 2-4, at the Marriott Wardman Park, located in Washington, D.C.

The annual forum will focus on three areas critical to the future of telemedicine: policy, strategy, and action.

American Telemedicine Association Takes Up Climate Change


Ahead of the weekend, MHW learned that The American Telemedicine Association (ATA) President Dr. Peter Yellowlees, MD, MBBS, will join the Medical Society Consortium on Climate & Health, consistent with ATA’s healthcare leadership role.

If you’re not familiar, the Consortium works to raise awareness of the negative effects of climate change on health and to educate the public, its constituents, and policymakers about the long-term health benefits of decreasing greenhouse gas emissions, among other preventative measures.

CEO Departs ATA After 24 Years


After nearly a quarter-century of service, the longtime Chief Executive Officer of the American Telemedicine Association, Jon Linkous, announced that he is stepping down.

“Jon was integral in the formation of the ATA and the telehealth industry,” said Peter Yellowlees, MD, MBBS, ATA’s current Board President. “We thank Jon for his many years of service and his significant contributions to ATA and the industry he helped create.”

We’re told that Dr. Sabrina Smith, ATA’s current Chief Operating Officer, will take on the role of Interim CEO. There will be a search to fill the position permanently.

ATA Announces Support for Department of Veterans Affairs Expansion of Telehealth


Ahead of the weekend, The American Telemedicine Association (ATA) weighed in on a big developing story in Washington.

Having long recognized the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) as a federal and national leader in telehealth, the ATA says it “strongly supports” the VA for eliminating state-by-state licensure requirements for health professionals employed by the Department of Veterans Affairs.

As the largest telehealth program in the U.S., the VA has long been a steward of innovative health delivery and financing models involving telehealth which support accessible, available, and affordable healthcare services to veterans.
