Opinion: Harnessing the Power of Big Data with Digital Health Partnerships

Word Cloud "Big Data"The following is a guest contributed post from Airstrip by Dr. Kevin Ward, Executive Director, University of Michigan Center for Integrative Research in Critical Care.

In today’s digital world, electronic patient data is growing exponentially and moving faster than healthcare organizations can imagine.  At the same time, clinicians suffer from information overload, and high-volume and increasingly complex clinical patient loads, alongside dwindling time and resources.

Now more than ever, the pressure is building to harness the power of big data and digital technologies to help clinicians make faster, patient-centric decisions that increase quality of care and enhance health outcomes all while decreasing costs.

Infographic: The Impact of EHR and Big Data’s Fusion

Infographic The Impact of EHR and Big Data's FusionWithout question, the newly forged and already inextricable link between big data and electronic health records will forever change the course of healthcare information technology.

The ongoing evolution comes plainly into sight thanks to a new infographic from the UC Berkeley School of Information.

In the visual shared below, venture capitalist Vinod Khosla puts it best: “In the next 10 years, data science and software will do more for medicine than all of the biological sciences together.”

Technology Simplifies Complex Amalgamation of Health Information Streams

Technology Simplifies Complex Amalgamation of Health Information StreamsIn Atlanta, Georgia today, physicians at Emory University Hospital are finding success with health IT. It’s being used to gather intricate streams of health-related data procured from an array of critical care machines to gain a single-view impression of a patient’s real-time condition.

All told, it’s a fascinating and proven real-world example of how big data is lending to practical and actionable uses for doctors in critical care situations.

“If you were to ask me, ‘What’s been going on with this patient for the last minute? The last five minutes? The last 30 minutes?’ I couldn’t tell you. There’s so much data going by,” Dr. Tim Buchman, director of the Emory Center for Critical Care, tells the Associated Press.

Big Data Helps Create New Strep Throat Risk Score

Big Data Helps Create New Strep Throat Risk ScoreA new risk measure called a “home score” could save a patient with symptoms of strep throat a trip to the doctor.

That’s the admission found in a new paper in the Annals of Internal Medicine, conducted by Andrew Fine, MD, MPH, and Kenneth Mandl, MD, MPH, of Boston Children’s Hospital.

The score combines patients’ symptoms and demographic information with data on local strep throat activity to estimate their strep risk, empowering them to seek care appropriately.
