Report: Cerner Clients Test SMART on FHIR Apps Within EHR

Report Cerner clients test SMART on FHIR apps within EHRmHealthWatch learned Tuesday morning that Cerner, a global name in healthcare technology, has unveiled a production version of HL7’s FHIR standard that is being tested in the Cerner Millennium electronic health record (EHR).

“This next-generation standards framework enables health care organizations to utilize Cerner’s open platform, which is designed to enable third-party innovators to advance care delivery and improve interoperability capabilities with other FHIR-compliant EHR systems,” said Dr. David McCallie, senior vice president of medical informatics at Cerner. “This integrated approach will provide clinicians access to ‘pluggable apps’ directly within their workflows that are designed to expand and transform the way care is delivered.”

The industry is buzzing over the news that Cerner is buying the health information technology business unit of Siemens. The Siemens acquisition is the most recent high-profile example of consolidation that is taking place in all sectors of healthcare.

The consolidation trend is not new, of course. Providers reacted first, by aligning as Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs) and clinical integration (CI) networks during the past five years. Then the passing of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) accelerated the need for collaboration, forcing providers to acquire additional acute care and post-acute care facilities as well as physicians’ offices. This consolidation trend was the first to expose the obvious lack of interoperability amongst vendors.

Cerner, Epic and MEDITECH Expand EMR FootprintAccording to an announcement shared with mHealthWatch late last week, Cerner, Epic and MEDITECH were the only EMR solutions that grew their market share in the past year.

This reality was brought to our attention in the latest KLAS report – “Clinical Market Share 2014: Competition Mounts as Markets Collide”

One of the findings of the report is that Epic and Cerner took the majority of wins in both the large- and small-facility segments.
