First Look: DexCom Opens Data Platform, Launches Dev Program to Fuel Diabetes App Innovation


MHW can now confirm that DexCom, Inc. — a powerhouse in continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) — is making available a public API empowering third-party developers to connect patient-authorized CGM data into a broad range of software applications.

According to the official word, this “pioneering approach to CGM data sharing is intended to enable a rich ecosystem of novel solutions and put the user in control of where and how they interact with their glucose data.”

“In launching this developer platform, Dexcom combines our CGM data expertise with the creativity of the developer ecosystem to enable new solutions and business models in the treatment and management of diabetes,” said Annika Jimenez, Senior Vice President of Data, Dexcom. “Dexcom believes in data mobility and customer choice. It also believes that the API opens up opportunities to drive Dexcom CGM data into the heart of new digital solutions for payers, providers, and most importantly people with diabetes.”

Fitbit, Dexcom to Develop Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) Experience


MHW learned Thursday that Fitbit — a leading global wearables brand — and DexCom, Inc. — a leader in continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) for people with diabetes — have cemented a new collaboration to develop and market products to help people better manage their diabetes and get a more complete picture of their overall health with easy-to-use mobile tools.

The first planned initiative is to bring Dexcom CGM data to Fitbit’s new smartwatch, Fitbit Ionic.

Through this experience, Dexcom CGM users on either Android or iOS devices would be able to see both activity and glucose levels, right on their wrist.

FDA Green Lights Mobile Continuous Glucose Monitoring System


FDA Green Lights Mobile Continuous Glucose Monitoring SystemOn Tuesday morning in San Diego, Dexcom — a provider of continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) solutions for patients with diabetes — announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the Dexcom G5 Mobile Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) System.

With wireless Bluetooth technology built into the device transmitter, the G5 Mobile CGM System “is the first and only fully mobile CGM system approved by the FDA for both adults and children as young as 2 years of age that sends glucose data directly to a smartphone.”

This technology, in short, frees users from the need to carry a separate receiver.
