HIMSS Conference Breaks Attendance Record with More than 37,000+ Attendees This Year

As the HIMSS Conference in Las Vegas starts to wind down it’s been announced that as of this morning, total attendance reached 37,032 attendees — easily surpassing the previous attendance record of last year’s event which drew 31,500.

“Sessions on Stage 1 and Stage 2 of meaningful use, ICD-10, mobile health and mHIMSS, business and clinical analytics, and more kept attendees busy during the week,” HIMSS officials said in a just published press release.  “HIMSS12 also included HIT X.0 and Leading from the Future, two conferences within a conference introduced last year.  In addition, Virtual HIMSS12 provided health IT professional unable to travel to the conference access to the keynote and other educational sessions.”

HIMSS: Verizon, Motorola and BoxTone Partner to Create Secure Android Devices/Apps Suitable for Health IT

It was announced during this week’s HIMSS conference that Verizon, Motorola and BoxTone are teaming up to develop secure solutions for Android-based devices and applications with the aim of making the platform suitable for health IT implementation.

The jointly created offering leverages BoxTone’s automated “Enterprise Mobility Management” (EMM) software platform on select Motorola devices,such as the DROID RAZR and DROID RAZR MAXX smartphones, as well as DROID XYBOARD 10.1 and 8.2 tablets, all of which leveraging Verizon’s 4G LTE network.  As such, healthcare organizations can now “reliably deploy Android-based mobile devices and apps that are designed to help them meet strict compliance requirements, including privacy measures outlined in the Health Information Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA).”

HIMSS Acquires mHealth Summit, Announces 2012 Event Focused on “Connecting the Mobile Health Ecosystem”

The Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) has announced that it’s added the mHealth Summit — one of the largest mobile healthcare events in the industry — to its growing portfolio of resources for the healthcare community.

Just days before the annual HIMSS conference in Las Vegas, the acquisition of the mHealth summit is a “natural next step” according to Richard Scarfo, HIMSS’ vice president of vendor events, who directed the summit for the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health before being hired by HIMSS.  “HIMSS sees this event as a developed, branded, recognized and successful event, and we want to bring that into the fold.”

HIMSS Launches mHealth IT Subsidiary Known as “mHIMSS,” Publishes new Survey Data

On Monday during the mHealth Summit in Washington, DC, the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) — the largest and most influential trade group in the health IT industry — formally launched a subsidiary targeted directly at the mobile health IT market.

Formally known as “mHIMSS,” the subsidiary will be headed up by Edna Boone, senior director for mobile initiatives at HIMSS since 2008.  The first order of business for mHIMSS was publishing a new report and survey on the current state of mobile technology in healthcare, which included responses from 164 mostly hospital-based CIOs and IT managers.  The survey revealed that just 38% of healthcare organizations had a formal strategy or policy regarding the use of mobile devices, with another 51% saying they were developing a policy.
