Breaking down the silos between data sources and departments involves a complex blend of technology and people that, not surprisingly, can result in conflict along the way. However, the ultimate goal remains the same for all: protect the patient. Understanding the concerns of each department and encouraging communication amongst the groups can reduce this tension, allowing for innovation to take hold and enhance care throughout an organization.

NHS England recently provided 17 healthcare IT entrepreneurs and experts £50,000 each to develop new healthcare technology. This is part of the NHS Innovation Accelerator program, which is designed specifically to support the growth small-scale health IT projects.
According to a report from Tech World, competition for funds was fierce, and the 17 selected were chosen from over 120 applicants. The projects they are working on a range anywhere from smartphone apps that remind children to brush their teeth, to mobile health monitors, and even mobile devices that can help to diagnose cancer in real time.

Rural communities are in need of help in many areas. One area currently being addressed is in the realm of healthcare assistance. Across the United States, there is manpower and desire to assist, but not the technology to get it done fast and efficiently.
In 2011, President Obama ordered the creation of the White House Rural Council Initiative. This group, led by the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), and the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), was established to help rural doctors and medical facilities find financing and enable them to afford healthcare information technology.
