New Report Assesses The Financial Health of HIT CompaniesOn Monday, Medical Economics – a leading business publication for physicians in the United States – released a new report ranking the top 100 health information technology (HIT) companies with complete electronic health records (EHR) systems.

According to the details shared with mHealthWatch, an estimated 729 companies offer EHR systems targeting healthcare providers.

Though experts say the market is ripe for consolidation, the financial health of these companies remains the most important determinant for product development, innovation and the ability to meet the next challenges of interoperability posed by the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology’s (ONC) EHR incentive program for Meaningful Use 2.

ONC & Health 2.0 Launch Three New Developer Challenges for Health IT Innovation

The folks behind the Health 2.0 Conference together with the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Innovation (ONC) have launched three new “Investing in Innovation” (i2) Initiative competitions that challenge developer communities to develop innovative health information technology (HIT) solutions.

Like many of the previous competitions we’ve seen from various government agencies and private organizations, the new i2 programs promote the use of technology to “drive better outcomes, engage users in their health and improve healthcare quality.”  The three new challenges being introduced are the “Health Innovations in Commuting Challenge,” “Discharge Follow-Up Appointment Challenge” and the “EHR Accessibility Module Challenge.”

Morgenthaler Ventures Announces 11 “Most Promising Health IT Startups”

Morgenthaler Ventures, a firm with nearly $3B under management, has announced the 11 finalists of their nationwide contest to find the “most promising health IT startups.”

Healthcare IT, particularly as it relates to the mobile channel, has seen significant investment over the last couple of years.  Capital investment in health IT increased in the second quarter of 2011 to $198 million, a 27% increase from the $156 million invested during the same period in 2010, according to research from Dow Jones VentureSource.   For the contest sponsored by Morgenthaler, the 11 company founders will present in front of leading venture capitalists, angel investors and entrepreneurs at a gathering dedicated to health IT innovation on September 22.
