Research: More than 50M Wireless Health Monitoring Devices to Ship by 2017


New research out recently by IMS Research pegs the total number of wireless health devices shipped over the next five years at more than 50 million.  Interestingly, the firm suggests that consumers, not telehealth patients, will drive the most adoption of such devices.

According to the report, dubbed “Wireless Opportunities in Health and Wellness Monitoring – 2012 Edition,” medical devices bought by consumer to self-monitor their health will account for more than 80 percent of all wireless-enabled consumer medical devices in 2016.  The demand for self-monitoring one’s health, however, is growing much faster than that for telehealth implementation, according to the report.

McKesson Foundation Launches “Mobilizing for Health” Research Grant


The McKesson Foundation, who provides funding to nonprofit organizations working to “improve the health of our communities,” has launched a new grant with the aim of researching mHealth apps and their effectiveness in improving health outcomes, particular for those with chronic illnesses.

Called “Mobilizing for Health,” the new research grant is aimed at studying mobile health applications and services that help low-income patients manage chronic diseases, with priority given to researchers studying the use of mobile in cancer management.  The new grant will work towards McKesson’s larger goal of its “Mobilizing for Health” initiative to improve health outcomes for under-served patients with chronic diseases through the widespread adoption of successful mHealth solutions.

Frost & Sullivan: mHealth App Market to Reach $392M in 2015


Research firm Frost & Sullivan has published a new report that suggests revenue earned from mHealth apps will reach $392M by 2015.

The report, entitled “Analysis of the U.S. Broadband mHealth Applications Market,” said that the mHealth market earned roughly $230M in 2010, and over the next 3 years is expected to expand exponentially as business models and significant value offerings continue to evolve.  The report also makes note of various restrictions on market entry, however, as seen in 2011 with the release of the FDA’s mHealth guidelines.

Telehealth Revenue to Reach $990M by 2015


Medical research firm InMedica has released a new whitepaper detailing the increased growth and adoption in telemedicine — an industry that’s forecast to produce more than 990M in revenues by 2015.

The whitepaper, entitled “Competitive Dynamics in the World Telehealth Market – 2011 to 2020,” looks at the telehealth market over the next 10 years and covers what it calls the “major parts of the ecosystem,” which include peripheral device suppliers – blood pressure monitors, glucose meters etc; gateway suppliers – health hubs and mobile gateways; and data transmission service providers – POTS, cellular and broadband.
