Nokia Shifts Focus Away from VR and Toward Digital Health


Nokia Corp. announced Tuesday that it will slash approximately one-third of its technologies unit workforce.

The reason? According to a report from MarketWatch, the company is shifting focus away from a “stalling” virtual reality market in order to ramp up its focus on digital health.

“The company said that up to 310 of its 1,090 employees in the unit will be affected by the move, with the majority of jobs likely to be lost in Finland, the U.S. and the U.K.,” the report notes.

Aegex Collaborates with Verizon, Nokia, Guardian Centers


MHW learned this week that Verizon, Nokia and  Aegex Technologies LLC  have collaborated on a unique partner and user event at the Guardian Centers focused on demonstrating a secure Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystem and emergency response technologies in a “meta-scale” environment with realistic industrial and emergency response scenarios.

According to a statement emailed to MHW, the event — Operation Convergent Response (#OCR2017) — is being held today and tomorrow at the Guardian Centers training facility in Perry, Georgia.

It is the largest collaborative effort for learning about and testing IoT and emergency response solutions for very large and complex hazardous areas.

Nokia Technologies to Collaborate with Helsinki Healthcare Organizations


Nokia to Acquire Withings in Digital Health PowerplayAccording to the news out of Finland, Nokia Technologies is set to collaborate with HUS/Helsinki University Hospital and University of Helsinki, Faculty of Medicine to create “innovative solutions for outpatient care and to foster mutual research and development.”

The first project under this collaboration will launch this quarter, with Nokia Technologies and HUS working to develop remote patient monitoring solutions. The collaboration is a first for Nokia Technologies, reflecting the company’s intent to enter the regulated healthcare space.

“Our vision is to empower people to make good decisions about their health by providing them and their physician with the critical information they need, when they need it,” said Cédric Hutchings, Vice President of Digital Health at Nokia Technologies. “I’m excited about our collaboration with HUS as it will help us extend our span of care from everyday health and wellness devices to clinical solutions that help improve patient/physician interaction while informing our continued research and development in the clinical space.”

Withings Acquisition a Done DealNokia announced Tuesday that it has closed the acquisition of Withings S.A. earlier than had been anticipated.

“Through this acquisition, originally announced on April 26, 2016, Nokia Technologies has established a new Digital Health business unit led by Cédric Hutchings, formerly CEO of Withings, who reports to Ramzi Haidamus, president of Nokia Technologies,” a statement emailed to MMW reads.

The Digital Health business unit combines the talented employees from Withings and experts from the preventive health and patient care teams in Nokia Technologies. The new business unit builds on the pioneering work of Withings, offering a family of award-winning digital health products designed to fit seamlessly into people’s lives, empowering them to make smarter decisions about the health and wellbeing of themselves and their families.

Nokia to Acquire Withings in Digital Health PowerplayAccording to a new report from VRJournal, Nokia made it official on Tuesday. The company is acquiring Withings, a leader in the connected health revolution.

The deal, which will likely close in the third quarter of this year, is worth a reported $191 million.

“We have said consistently that digital health was an area of strategic interest to Nokia, and we are now taking concrete action to tap the opportunity in this large and important market,” Rajeev Suri, president & CEO of Nokia was quoted in a statement emailed to VRJournal.

Nokia Taps mHealth Talent for XCHALLENGE Judging PanelOn Wednesday, XPRIZE and Nokia announced the Judging Panel and Scientific Advisory Board for the first competition in the $2.25 million Nokia Sensing XCHALLENGE.

XCHALLENGE is a fixed-date series of two separate and consecutive competitions over two years to develop sensing technologies that capture meaningful information about a consumer’s state of health and surrounding environment.
