National Coordinator of ONC Stepping Down


National Coordinator of ONC Stepping DownDr. Farzad Mostashari is stepping down as National Coordinator for Health Information Technology this fall.

Farzad, a leader in the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) for the last four years, stunned many with the unexpected news of his pending departure.

No reason was given for the resignation, however, U.S. Secretary of Health & Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius confirmed the news.

ONC Calls for Public Comments on mHealth Device Privacy, Security and Best Practices


The Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology has issued a call for public comments surrounding the security, privacy and best practices of using mobile devices in healthcare.

More specifically, the ONC is seeking comments on three categories, including real-world uses of mobile devices by providers and other healthcare delivery professionals; real-world privacy and security practices, strategies and technology; and other general comments on the use of mobile devices by providers and other healthcare delivery professionals.

ONC & Health 2.0 Launch Three New Developer Challenges for Health IT Innovation


The folks behind the Health 2.0 Conference together with the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Innovation (ONC) have launched three new “Investing in Innovation” (i2) Initiative competitions that challenge developer communities to develop innovative health information technology (HIT) solutions.

Like many of the previous competitions we’ve seen from various government agencies and private organizations, the new i2 programs promote the use of technology to “drive better outcomes, engage users in their health and improve healthcare quality.”  The three new challenges being introduced are the “Health Innovations in Commuting Challenge,” “Discharge Follow-Up Appointment Challenge” and the “EHR Accessibility Module Challenge.”

ONC Debuts New Privacy & Security Initiative to Establish Mobile Healthcare Data Best Practices


A new initiative developed by the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology’s Office of the Chief Privacy Officer, working with the Department of Health and Human Services’ Office for Civil Rights was launched recently to better understand the privacy and security implications of processing healthcare data via mobile devices.

The goal of the new initiative is to develop “an effective and practical way to bring awareness and understanding to those in the clinical sector to help them better secure and protect health information while using mobile devices.”
