Diversinet Receives Patent for Storing Healthcare Data on Mobile Devices


It was announced today that Diversinet, who bills itself as a “leader in connected and protected mobile healthcare communication,” has been awarded a patent for its method for storing sensitive personal health information on mobile devices.

U.S. Patent # 8,051,297, “A Method for Binding a Security Element to a Mobile Device,” covers the security of information on smartphones and tablets, and prevents unauthorized access to sensitive data via an “Anti-Cloning Encryption” method.  This method prevents access to the information if it’s transferred to another mobile device and uses characteristics of a mobile device’s unique identity, such as its serial number, to create the encryption passkey.

Washington Hospital Center Teams With AT&T on Secure Mobile App for Live Video Streams


It was announced today that Washington Hospital Center in Washington D.C. has teamed with AT&T to create what’s being called “CodeHeart,” a secure mobile application that provides real-time video and audio streams for use in critical care situations related to heart conditions, such as ambulances in transit.

The new app allows first responders to remotely initiate a real-time video/audio session with hospital cardiologists so they can instantly view a patient’s condition and ECGs, for example, or guide the first responder on interim treatment and prepare the hospital to provide appropriate care while the patient is en route to the emergency room.  The solution also provides physicians the ability to view vital signs and test results — like electrocardiograms (ECG) — captured through a real-time video feed.

ABI Research: Healthcare Wi-Fi Market To Reach $1.3B By 2016


In an interesting forecast published by ABI Research, the firm suggests that the healthcare Wi-Fi market will reach more than $1.3B by 2016.

The report, entitled “Wireless Technologies in Professional Healthcare,” looked at the growing global market for Wi-Fi hardware and services within the healthcare industry.  One of the largest drivers, according to the report, is the increase in Wi-Fi-embedded consumer devices making their way into professional healthcare locations, furthering the demand for access to healthcare-based Wi-Fi networks. “ABI Research expects the number of smartphone and handheld computing devices leveraging professional healthcare Wi-Fi networks to grow by close to 20% in this market in 2011,” says Jonathan Collins, principal analyst, wireless healthcare and M2M.
