mHealth Alliance Relocating to Where mHealth is Needed MostThis week, the mHealth Alliance, a global organization charged with advancing the evolution and reach of mHealth, announced plans to move its headquarters from the U.S. to Africa.

SciDevNet is reporting that the move to South Africa will help the group achieve its lofty goals for the advancement of mHealth throughout the remainder of this decade.

Patricia Mechael, executive director of the mHealth Alliance, says the transition will sharpen their strategy to systematically address critical gaps such as country-level policy developments and institutional capacity building, and needs identified by the mHealth and broader global health communities.

HealthID Gives South African Market a Helpful EHR AppLast year, health insurance provider Discovery Health introduced to the South African market a groundbreaking electronic health-record application called HealthID.

For the time being, HealthID is available on the Apple iPad but it will soon be Android compatible.

The electronic health record is at the heart of the application and stores valuable clinical information derived from claims data and pathology laboratories.

According to Engineering News Online, doctors can access their patients’ details of previous medical consultations with other doctors and at hospitals.

Mobile Vital to the Care of HIV-Positive Pregnant Women in South AfricaAccording to the findings of a new study highlighted in the Journal of Medical Internet Research this week, most of the world’s women living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) reside in sub-Saharan Africa.

“Although efforts to reduce mother-to-child transmission are underway,” the report reads, “obtaining complete and accurate data from rural clinical sites to track progress presents a major challenge.”

Auspiciously, mobile devices – in particular, cell phones – are changing this reality. Mobile phones have become a valuable tool for clinic-based face-to-face data collection with pregnant women living with HIV in South Africa.
