Healthcare IT VC Funding SurgesOn Tuesday, Mercom Capital Group, a global communications and research firm, released its report on funding and mergers and acquisitions (M&A) activity for the Healthcare Information Technology (IT) / Digital Health sector for Q2 2016.

Per the findings of the report, which covers deals of all sizes across the globe, healthcare IT VC funding is surging this year.

“Venture capital (VC) funding in the Health IT sector, including private equity and corporate VC, came to $1.6B (billion) in 140 deals in Q2 2016 compared to $1.4B in 146 deals in Q1 2016; up 33 percent YoY,” the report summary reads.

mHealth Seeing Positive Strides In Venture Capital Funding


mHealth Seeing Positive Strides In Venture Capital FundingThe first quarter numbers are in, and so far 2015 is seeing positive strides in venture capital funding for healthcare IT and digital health companies.

Business Solutions reports that total investments were around $784 million in Q1, of which mHealth secured the largest share of investments at 36%. Of that 36%, 56 deals were made.

The surge in mHealth funding is likely related to the FDA providing investors who were formally on the fence when it came to mHealth with a clear understanding of what their regulatory guidelines would be. Since the FDA will be providing minimal regulations and guidelines, many investors are now contributing to this still emerging industry.

Venture Funding for Web 2.0, Mobile Health Apps Jumped 44 Percent in 2011


It’s been revealed that more than $439M has been poured into 70 different Web 2.0 healthcare startups that develop mobile health apps and tools for online social networking and collaboration in 2011.

In 2010, a little more than $305M was raised for 43 different deals, meaning 2011 showed a 44% increase in dollars invested and a 63% increase in deals funded compared to 2010.  “We are at the very early stages of an evolution in the entire healthcare system,” Jessica Canning, global research director for Dow Jones VentureSource, told InformationWeek Healthcare. “We are essentially witnessing the democratization of healthcare where detailed information is being collected both from healthy people as well as individuals trying to improve their physical wellness.”
