This week, the World Health Organization made international headlines when it changed course on its longstanding position regarding the supposed health threats posed by mobile phone usage.
Thanks in part to a new study sponsored by the organization, an assembled team of scientists discovered that cell phone radiation may, indeed, be “possibly carcinogenic to humans.”
But according to the Environmental Working Group, – “a lobbying group that advocates on behalf of public health and the environment” – there are varying levels of radiation exposure threats posed by different cell phones.
Where does your phone rank among the culprits? The EWG has published a list of leading handsets and their corresponding radiation emission levels.
The FCC has established a legal limit for SAR on a mobile phone, which is 1.6 watts per kilogram (W/kg).
Based on information presented in the list compiled by the Environmental Working Group, the Motorola Bravo from AT&T just barely beats the limit with 1.59 W/kg. Conversely, near the lowest end of the spectrum is the LG Quantum from AT&T, which logged just 0.35 watts per kilogram (0.35 W/kg).
Upon the list’s publication, many Apple fans looked into where the iPhone placed among the rankings. The iPhone 4, as it turns out, finished near the middle of all devices ranked, logging 1.17 watts per kilogram, which is better than the 1.19 W/kg of the iPhone 3GS. iPhone 3G performed best at 1.03 W/kg.
