Ford Exploring Ways To Support Wearable Technology In Their CarsThere are many ways in which wearable technology can improve one’s health and wellness. This includes monitoring of everything from blood glucose levels, blood oxygen levels, and vital signs. With the growing popularity of wearable technology, and the direct connection between health and safe driving, Ford is now exploring ways to accommodate Internet connected devices within their vehicles.

According to the Wall Street Journal, while Ford is not looking to enter the healthcare industry, they are looking to support the daily lives of their drivers. Think of this along the same lines as having a built-in iPod jack or built-in DVD player.

Ford, Microsoft Announce Alliance to Explore In-car Health at CES's Digital Health SummitFord has made it clear that it’s interested in exploring in-car healthcare technology, and during a keynote address at the Digital Health Summit announced a new alliance with Microsoft, Healthrageous and BlueMetal Architects to explore new ways to leverage technology to help people monitor and maintain health and wellness while on the move.

“People are spending more time in their cars, and with the tremendous growth in mobile healthcare solutions, Ford is dedicated to understanding the value of being able to connect to health and wellness-related services while driving,” said Gary Strumolo, manager of Infotainment, Interiors, Health and Wellness at Ford Research and Innovation during the keynote.  “Our connectivity platform – Ford SYNC – provides easy, voice-controlled access to mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets, and therefore it makes sense to research areas that are important to our customers.”

Ford Prepares to Debut “Synced” Vehicle

At the Wireless Health 2011 conference this week in California, Ford Motor Company’s plan to incorporate mHealth technologies into its vehicles will become a reality. As promised this spring, the company’s in-car health monitoring system Sync will include coaching apps for diabetes and asthma, in addition to glucose monitoring and allergy notifications.

WellDoc has paired with Ford to provide drivers with diabetic and asthmatic coaching from their car’s front seat. The system gives drivers with diabetes or asthma voice-activated access to health information such as medication reminders.
