GSMA Announced ‘Big Data for Social Good’ Initiative


GSMA Focusing mHealth Efforts on Sub-Saharan AfricaThis week in Barcelona, Spain at Mobile World Congress, the GSMA launched the “Big Data for Social Good” initiative.

The effort, we’re told, will leverage mobile operators’ big data capabilities to address humanitarian crises, including epidemics and natural disasters.

According to the official word on the initiative, the program is being launched with 16 of the world’s leading mobile operators – Bharti Airtel, Deutsche Telekom, Hutchison, KDDI, KT Corporation, Millicom, MTS, NTT DOCOMO, INC., Orange, SK Telecom, Telefónica, Telenor, Telia, Turkcell, Vodafone and Zain – which collectively account for over 2 billion connections across more than 100 countries.

GSMA Dishes New Details for MWC Shanghai 2017


GSMA Focusing mHealth Efforts on Sub-Saharan AfricaThe GSMA recently provided updates for the 2017 GSMA Mobile World Congress Shanghai to be held from Wednesday, June 28 through July 1 2017 at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre (SNIEC).

Among new developments, the GSMA announced the launch of the 2017 Asia Mobile Awards and provided further details on the Mobile World Congress Shanghai conference program, as well as additional companies participating in the exhibition.

“We are looking forward to hosting the second edition of our Asia Mobile Awards, with new categories and awards that recognize the companies, individuals, products and services at the forefront of innovation in our industry,” said Michael O’Hara, Chief Marketing Officer at GSMA. “We’re also excited to be expanding our conference program for 2017, with keynotes and summits addressing the full gamut of mobile industry trends.”

More Healthcare Industry Professionals Expected at MWC 2016With 2015 rapidly approaching its end, one of 2016’s most eagerly anticipated events draws closer on the calendar.

Last week, the GSMA outlined the first details of the 2016 GSMA Mobile World Congress, including confirmed keynote speakers, exhibitors and sponsors, as well as programs and activities taking place at the annual mobile industry event.

Under the theme ‘Mobile is Everything’, Mobile World Congress will be held 22-25 February 2016 at Fira Gran Via in Barcelona, with events also taking place at Fira Montjuïc. The GSMA expects that more than 95,000 attendees from across the mobile industry and adjacent industry sectors will gather for the 2016 event.

GSMA: Sub-Saharan Africa Leads The World In Mobile Growth


GSMA Sub-Saharan Africa Leads The World In Mobile GrowthOn Monday, the GSMA published its latest comprehensive study of the socio-economic impact of the mobile industry in Sub-Saharan Africa.

“Sub-Saharan Africa Mobile Economy 2013,” developed by GSMA Intelligence, reveals that mobile contributes over six percent of the region’s GDP, higher than any other comparable region globally, and this is forecast to rise to over eight percent by 2020.

Last year, the mobile ecosystem directly supported 3.3 million jobs and contributed US $21 billion to public funding in the region, including license fees. By 2020, mobile is set to double its economic effect, employing 6.6 million men and women in the region and contributing US $42 billion to public funding.

Diabetes Awareness at the Core of GSMA Grand Tour


DiabetesAs MHW covered earlier this week, the GSMA mHealth Grand Tour kicked off this week and the world is taking notice of this 13-day cycling challenge from Brussels to Barcelona.

The impetus for this year’s tour is to raise awareness of diabetes and showcase the power of mobile health solutions.

The tour began yesterday at the Autoworld Museum in Parc Cinquantenaire, Brussels.

A key element of the mHealth Grand Tour is a first-of-its-kind observational study designed by Professor Michael Trenell, NIHR Senior Research Fellow and Director, MoveLab, Newcastle University, into the effects of multi-day endurance exercise on blood glucose levels, using data captured and transmitted wirelessly through a multi-vendor mHealth solution.
