Democratization of Medicine Discussed at Health 2.0On Monday, during his Health 2.0 keynote address, Dr. Eric Topol — Editor-in-Chief of Medscape and Chief Academic Officer of Scripps Health – drew attention to what he calls the democratization of medicine (i.e.., cutting edge digital health technologies impacting the relationship between patients and their physicians).

Leading to the most buzz, however, was Dr. Topol’s unveiling of key findings from a new WebMD/Medscape survey of patients and healthcare professionals.

The WebMD/Medscape survey, say those behind the report’s composition, reveals “unique and often surprising perspectives” about patients’ and physicians’ willingness to embrace the use of digital technology.

“Acupera recently launched a unique module at St. Vincent Health, a 22-hospital system based in Indiana, sponsored by Ascension Health,” Dr. Razmi shares. “This module called Planned Visit Agendas allows physicians to view the gaps in clinical care for each scheduled patient on a daily basis. This is provided to them in an organized format that categorizes gaps based on disease and shows all relevant clinical information. This enables physicians to quickly close gaps in their patients’ care and achieve the best possible outcomes.”

MHW: What are some of the most exciting projects in development or recently brought to market by your company?

Sean: We revamped our Population Health Dashboard (PhD) with two major improvements this year.

First, we extended our analysis to include health risk assessment, biometrics, and productivity data. Second, this version also includes event and program tracking which allows employers to input their own health care activities and see the impact to their population’s costs and conditions.

Another big milestone for us has been the ability to produce research on our data. We’ve recently published findings on important health care topics like avoidable ER visits, and the impact of high cost cases.

Canadian Mobile Health Startup Shines at Health 2.0


Canadian Mobile Health Startup Shines at Health 2.0Vancouver-based Curatio – an mHealth-focused company – says it has been crowned the winner of the Novartis’ Global competition to create an innovative health care mobile application.

Curatio’s application – ThaliMe – was “commended for its originality, user-focused design and strong technical approach.”

It was presented to 2000 attendees at the 7th annual Health 2.0 Conference in Silicon Valley on Tuesday afternoon.

ThaliMe is a personalized support and tracking tool designed especially for people with thalassemia. It provides users with a virtual support group and allows direct interaction with healthcare professionals.
