Cognizant Tapped by CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield for mHealth InitiativesCognizant recently announced that it has been selected by CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield (CareFirst), a leading not-for-profit health care company, to support the insurer’s mHealth efforts.

A leading provider of information technology, consulting, and business process outsourcing services, Cognizant says it will help Carefirst leverage mobile technology for its 3.3 million members.

In its 76th year of service, CareFirst is an independent licensee of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association.

Per the details shared in the formal news announcement, Cognizant will work with CareFirst to establish a direct connection with its members, to provide them quick, secure and convenient ways to manage their health coverage, access information about physicians and claims, and obtain details about benefits anytime, anywhere using smartphones and tablets.

mHealth Survey: More than 500 mHealth Projects are Taking Place Around the World


In a new study commissioned recently by Telenor Group and the Boston Consulting Group called “Socio-Economic Impact of mHealth,” it was revealed that there’s now more than 500 mobile healthcare projects taking place around the world.

The survey included studying the impact that mHealth initiatives can have across 12 different countries.  The countries were grouped into three clusters, each with a different set of primary healthcare challenges.  Where countries in one cluster primarily face challenges with non-communicable diseases and quickly growing system costs, countries in another cluster struggle with maternal/child health, communicable diseases and limited access to health care. What unites them all is that mobile health technology can “improve the quality, reach and effectiveness of services while reducing costs and the overall system burden,” the authors noted.

ONC Debuts New Privacy & Security Initiative to Establish Mobile Healthcare Data Best Practices


A new initiative developed by the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology’s Office of the Chief Privacy Officer, working with the Department of Health and Human Services’ Office for Civil Rights was launched recently to better understand the privacy and security implications of processing healthcare data via mobile devices.

The goal of the new initiative is to develop “an effective and practical way to bring awareness and understanding to those in the clinical sector to help them better secure and protect health information while using mobile devices.”
