Text Messages Can Improve Medication Adherence By Up To 17 PercentAs reported this morning by our sister site Mobile Marketing Watch, text messages can, indeed, prove to be a real life saver.

A recent article posted in the Journal of Clinical Nursing finds that text message reminders can improve medication adherence by 15.3 to 17.8 percent. The report was completed at Michigan State University by Tracy DeKoekkoek, R.N. and her colleagues—and reviewed data compiled by multiple studies.

The data was gathered from 13 studies individual that focused on text message intervention designed to improve medication adherence. Some of these studies, a report summary from DoctorsLounge explains, provided standard text messages, and some featured text messages that were custom-tailored to the patient.

Study Young Adults Well Served by 'Text Message Medicine'With each passing year, mobile solutions and resources designed to treat a wide array of conditions and ailments common to young adults gain more widespread adoption. In particular, text messages are seeing the most promising results of all solutions or tactics.

According to the findings of a new study published in Annals of Emergency Medicine, young adults who screened positive for a history of hazardous or binge drinking reduced their binge drinking by more than 50 percent after receiving mobile phone text messages following a visit to the emergency department.

Text Messages Improve User Mood and Weight Loss Success


A pilot study with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina collected data that demonstrated a correlation between weight loss success and motivating text messages.

HEALTHeME, an mHealth weight management program, released the results of this 300 person, 12 week study, which demonstrated that recipients felt more energetic and happy after getting a motivational text from the weight management program. Additionally, 91 percent of the surveyed participants said that the tailored text messages made it easier for them to follow the program, leading to successful weight loss of up to 20 lbs.

This, combined with the relatively low total of linguistically and culturally prepared healthcare providers, leaves a significant gap in the healthcare system for the Hispanic population.
